As one chapter ended, it was time to begin the next one that we had been planning for a very long time. Through it all, we found a new passion and realized a valuable lesson.

Walking out of my office and handing the reins off to the next person in charge, it distinctly felt like an ending. When I retired as Chief of Police, I already had the wheels in motion toward my next step: Florida.

When we married in 2001, I promised my wife, Sheryl, we would move from Michigan to Florida at the first opportunity available. With children still in school and my active career in law enforcement alongside her medical career, we knew it was not an immediate option. However, we never lost sight of the dream.

Both of us come from previous marriages and have four children in our blended family. The same year I went through a divorce, Sheryl became a widow. We both continued to move forward in our own ways. I had to work to understand my new dynamic within my family, and Sheryl kept things as normal as possible for her children as a single mother.

Our stories may have different origins, but they intersected and created the life we live today. We knew each other through work because she was an EMT in the emergency room at the time, and as a police officer, I spent many hours there. Neither of us likes sitting still, which is part of why we chose such active careers.

We have both always been resourceful and energetic. In our careers, especially in the emergency room and on a SWAT team (which was one of my positions), we often had to make 30 decisions in a microsecond based on what we knew and what was around us simply to keep others safe. Sheryl worked in the emergency room for 20 years before becoming a flight attendant. I retired from my 34-year career in law enforcement as Chief after rising from the very bottom of the barrel where I started at 19 years old as a part-time dispatcher.

We believe in doing our best in everything we do, whether as parents, grandparents, REALTORS®, or members of the community. I am most proud of the legacy I left during my years in law enforcement and look forward to what Sheryl and I can accomplish together through real estate.

When we moved here in 2017, I was initially disappointed that our house hunt was over. For countless hours I had researched local communities and the real estate market here. It was not long before I decided to become a REALTOR® myself and started to help others achieve their dream of homeownership here in Florida. I loved it right away, and Sheryl joined me on the team in 2021 as a licensed REALTOR® as well. We are The Coastal Couple, and we work together to help our clients achieve their goals.

Somewhere along the way, we realized that coming up with the answer does not automatically mean applying it. It is a daily practice, and some days you do better than others. Perfection is a myth, so we do what we need to do and continue striving to do better. Raising children, helping others and building careers are all constantly evolving endeavors. No matter what we encounter, we enjoy adapting to find the best solutions possible.

Whenever I am not working, I enjoy sports and nature photography, and playing guitar, while Sheryl is wild about her pug! We both like to travel, play pickleball and spend time with our grandchildren. Our favorite part of being REALTORS® is helping our clients’ dreams come true.
